HOW YOU PLAY THE GAME
proposal for a interactive public artwork, 2015
12 basketball nets, 6 lacrosse nets, 12 hockey nets, 6 golf holes with flags, 12 cricket wickets all painted white
The installation questions the formal rules and arrangements of games and engages the public to reconsider basic assumptions associated with different organized sports. Both an active and performative piece during the celebrations on Canada Day and an evocative composition thereafter, HOW YOU PLAY THE GAME uses everyday elements of sports equipment but aims to speak of higher goals. By bringing together the paraphernalia of various games, which are favoured by diverse populations, and creating an environment that uses them all at once, the work alludes to the broader themes of multiculturalism and inclusiveness.
