Public space has always offered opportunities to encounter strangers but while we may occupy a common space our experiences often remain solitary, a situation compounded by the prevalent distraction of portable technologies. Between the current political climate and the echo-chambers of our world-views created by social media, the need for shared physical experiences is paramount. ‘Dialogue’ offers a spark to start them.
The circle of interlaced sound tubes is a social infrastructure that aims to create conversations ranging in length and seriousness and connecting individuals in the highly public space of the Eastman Reading Garden.
Through simple, small dialogues and moments of spontaneous interaction we can start to relate to one another and to speak with other members of the community who may come from different circumstances and who may hold opposing views to our own.
