ASSEMBLY

Social Infrastructure No.38
Toronto, Ontario, 2025

Curated by Yuluo Wei for Steelcase Art Projects

Responding to the industrial park around it, “Assembly” is a social infrastructure made from off-the-shelf elements that can be readily found nearby: warehouse rolling ladders and metal shop welding curtains. As both a conceptual and an ecological approach, the sculpture engages the temporary nature of its six month run by being assembled from elements that will be reused after so that the installation produces zero waste.

In reference to the recent provincial and federal elections and threats to our sovereignty at home and democracy abroad, the installation is inspired by different forms of assembly in parliaments around the world. Seeking to create a model democratic space for gathering, the seating is arranged in a circular form and approachable from all sides without hierarchy. Steelcase Art Projects will engage students through their summer outreach program, using “Assembly” as a base and centring their programming on themes relating to democracy and social infrastructure, inspired by the installation.
