Mounds was a response to imagining a simple play sculpture that would allow children to use their bodies to play with gravity. The hills were covered in blue playground rubber to attract kids and give them intuitive permission to appropriate the space while providing a soft landing. The height and the form with three peaks were determined by the maximum angle at which a mound of rubber could be safely installed coupled with the linear shape of our assigned site. The resulting dunes are intentionally abstract, leaving them open to interpretation to promote non-prescriptive play while also encouraging teenagers and adults to appropriate the space.
